The Salvation Army Greater New York Divisional Headquarters 120 W. 14th Street, New York, NY 100114 Job Title : Director of Major Gifts ( DMG) Job Classification: Exempt Department : Development Date : October 2019 Reports To : Divisional Director of Advancement Compensation : Commensurate with experience GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB The Director of Major Gifts (DMG) has primary responsibility for leading a growing team of talented, enthusiastic and ambitious major gift officers or ?Donor Relations Directors? (DRDs) to fulfill fundraising goals of the Division?s major gifts program. He or she works with the DRDs and the Divisional Director of Advancement to determine cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for donors and prospects at leadership giving levels of $10K and above, contributing to portfolios with values $1million. The DMG works closely with the Divisional Director of Advancement and staff members of Territorial Headquarters, especially the Territorial Associate Director of Major Gifts, to plan and execute approved strategies associated with annual fundraising goals. The DMG will be expected to model best practices in major gift fundraising by successfully meeting goals associated with his or her own caseloadof 75 high net-worth donors and prospects capable of making five, six and seven-figure gifts. Responsibilities included oversight of prospect identification, research and assignment to ensure a continuous pipeline of individuals with leadership giving capacity and inclination. Building relationships with service centers across the Division, as well as with leaders in key program areas such as Emergency Services is critical to telling The Salvation Army story and connecting donors and prospects with major giving opportunities, further enhancing Divisional fundraising. The selected candidate must be able to attend occasional evening and weekend events, to develop working relationships with major donors and to support the fundraising initiatives at Divisional Headquarters and at assigned service center locations. Candidates will thrive in a faith-based organization. While not required to embrace the tenets of The Salvation Army church, the Director of Major Gifts will be expected to promote and respect the organization?s mission. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise Donor Relations Directors responsible for major gift fundraising ($10,000 and above) throughout the Greater New York division. For each DRD, regularly review the portfolio to set goals and determine appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for donors and prospects. Work with the Divisional Director of Advancement and THQ to apply Salvation Army standards and metrics for donor communications and personal visits. Balance caseloads as necessary to ensure equity among donor/prospect portfolios. Coordinate involvement of departmental staff in preparing customized donor communications for DRDs as appropriate. Provide training as needed on functions and protocols for Salesforce NPSP donor management platform. Bring vision and strategic thinking to help shape overall policies and strategies to continually increase major gifts revenue and program growth. Create more purposeful and strategic interaction between donors and Salvation Army personnel and programs in order to grow more fruitful donor relationships. Model best practices in attaining annual goals for a separate DMG portfolio of 75 donors and prospects. As appropriate, oversee preparation of proposals generated by DRDs for individual donors. Ensure high quality written and design elements in all printed Divisional collateral material for donors. Encourage collaboration and communication among direct mail, foundation, corporate and planned giving staff to ensure accurate, timely and tightly coordinated communication with donors and prospects. Work closely with local corps officers and program directors to maximize fundraising opportunities with donors in specific service areas and geographic boundaries of each corps command. Create more purposeful interaction between donors and Salvation Army personnel and programs in order to grow more fruitful donor relationships. Assume other duties as needed, including but not limited to participation and attendance at Division events. QUALIFICATIONS, SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES A passion for The Salvation Army?s mission and ability to convey and inspire genuine affection for the work of the organization. Natural ability to reflect and model the high standards of The Salvation Army as one of the world?s most distinguished human services charitable organization. Bachelor?s degree, plus five to seven years fundraising experience, including experience managing people in a development function. Track record of effective donor stewardship and gifts secured at five figures and above. Self-starter with great problem-solving skills who exudes enthusiasm and energy along with a demonstrated ability to set and achieve goals and meet deadlines. Demonstrated success leading and managing people, including goal setting, addressing areas for professional development and inspiring communication and collaboration. Solid grasp and essential experience in all areas of development: Major and Planned Gifts, special events, Corporate and foundation giving, capital campaigns, and direct marketing. Working knowledge of public relations and communications practice, experience in crafting and delivering a time-sensitive message through both conventional and contemporary methods (such as social media). Effective interpersonal skills and proven ability to build and maintain genuine relationships with diverse individuals: donors, prospects, volunteer leaders, corps officers, and other stakeholders, and other leaders and partners in the Greater New York Community. Fully at ease interacting with high net worth individuals and discussing a range of personal issues that are important to donors; skilled at identifying or helping donors to articulate their philanthropic goals with The Salvation Army in mind. Maturity and sound judgement; ability to manage internal development issues as well as perform as a reliable ambassador for The Salvation Army in an external role. Excellent written skills, oral communication skills and strong presentation skills. Creative and strategic thinker who can bring vision to leading the development function for the organization. Positive, energetic, engaged team players who can also work independently in a complex environment, managing multiple projects and competing priorities. Willingness to travel regularly within the Division. Driver?s license required. A proficiency in Word and Excel required. Experience with Salesforce NPSP database software, preferred. GENERAL STATEMENTS 1. The DMG shall refrain from any activity that may be construed as, or lead to, a conflict of interest, i.e., sales of securities, real estate, insurance, etc. Where such training, licensor, and experience may have been acquired from previous employment, she/he shall, under no circumstances use Salvation Army contacts or resources or represent The Salvation Army in any process for personal gain. 2.The DMG shall refrain from executing any legal documents on behalf of The Salvation Army. 3. The DMG shall refrain from investing or subordinating funding rightly belonging to The Salvation Army. 4. The DMG shall refrain from any personal gain because of donor contacts. She/He shall not accept any gratuities or gifts or allow bequests or remainder interests to accrue to any individual affiliated with or representing The Salvation Army. 5. The DMG shall maintain confidentiality of all information received in view of her/his position and shall not, at time of termination as an employee of The Salvation Army, remove any records, documents, software or other programs that shall be construed to be the property of The Salvation Army. 6.The DMG shall comply with guidelines relating to budget, expenditures and accountability of same. 7. The DMG shall comply with guidelines relating to activity and achievement reporting including periodic personnel conferences with supervisory staff.
